A word that means "wow"

Countach isn't a bull. Almost every Lamborghini is named after one, but Lamborghini's own press release explains that Countach is an exclamation of surprise and wonder in Piedmontese dialect, pronounced "coon-tach." It's what someone says when something stops them in their tracks. That's not marketing; that's a fair description of what happens in parking lots.

Why a 2021 car has a 1971 name

The original Countach prototype appeared at the Geneva Motor Show in 1971. Over nearly 20 years Lamborghini built five versions of it, and it became, in the company's words, "the poster car of the 1980s." If you had one on your bedroom wall, you are the target audience, and Lamborghini knows it.

For the 50th anniversary, Lamborghini unveiled the Countach LPI 800-4 on 13 August 2021 at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, during Monterey Car Week. They built 112 of them, and Lamborghini says they were sold out before the car premiered.

Reading the name like a VIN

The hybrid that isn't a Prius

The V12 is 6.5 liters and makes 780 CV by itself. Bolted to the gearbox is a 48-volt electric motor adding 34 CV, fed not by a battery but by a supercapacitor, the same system Lamborghini developed for the Sián. Lamborghini says this supercapacitor setup is three times more powerful than a lithium-ion battery of the same weight. The point isn't fuel economy. It's response: the electric motor fills in the gaps so the car feels instant.

Lamborghini's figures: 0–62 mph in 2.8 seconds, 0–124 mph in 8.6 seconds, top speed 355 km/h (about 221 mph). The chassis and every body panel are carbon fiber.

Spot the references

This is the fun part if you're killing time. Lamborghini's designers packed the car with callbacks:

And then the modern stuff: a glass roof that switches from solid to transparent at the push of a button, and air vents made with 3D printing. It's what a 1974 kid thought 2021 would look like, and then it actually showed up.

The launch color tells a story

The car was unveiled in a color called Bianco Siderale, which Lamborghini says contains a hint of pearlescent blue and recalls Ferruccio Lamborghini's own Countach LP 400 S. Ferruccio founded the company. So the launch car was basically dressed as the boss's personal car. Respect.

The one Darin photographed

The white Countach on this card was photographed by Darin at Lamborghini Miami, sitting on the showroom floor with other cars stacked behind it. Tap the photo and you land on Lamborghini Miami's listing for a 2022 Countach LPI 800-4.

About the price: our notes have it at $3,101,747, but when we checked the listing page on 21 October 2026, no price was printed on it. So we're calling that number unconfirmed. Ask the dealer. If you have to ask, you are in the same club as us, and the club meets wherever there's decent Wi-Fi.

How rare is rare

One hundred and twelve, worldwide. For comparison, more people show up to a decent office birthday party. Most people will only ever see one on a screen, which, fittingly, is exactly how most people saw the original: on a poster.

The honest part
